The Mainz Psalter

The Dawn of Printed Liturgical Books

The Mainz Psalter, printed in 1457 by Johann Fust and Peter Schöffer, represents a landmark achievement in early European printing. As the second major printed book after Gutenberg’s Bible, it was the first to include a printed date of publication and a colophon detailing its printers. Notably, it incorporated colored initials printed in red and blue inks, a sophisticated technique of the time.

Crafted in Mainz, Germany, this Psalter showcased the beauty and precision achievable through movable type. Its blend of text, musical notation, and ornate decoration made it an influential model for subsequent liturgical printing.

But what exactly is a Psalter? A Psalter is a book containing the Book of Psalms from the Bible, often enriched with hymns, prayers, and musical notation for use in Christian worship and private devotion. In medieval Europe, Psalters were among the most frequently used devotional books, valued for both their spiritual significance and their artistry.

In homage to the Mainz Psalter, I have digitally recreated one of its most celebrated pages, preserving the design elegance of the original while offering the clarity and refinement possible with today’s digital tools. Using digital typesetting and vector illustration, this modern tribute captures the visual rhythm, typographic richness, and sacred beauty of the 15th-century original.

Below is a side-by-side comparison of my recreation and the original Mainz Psalter page (1459 edition, from Bodleian Libraries, Oxford):
